Action Research Plan
ePortfolios can be implemented in schools and are proven to be effective and successful for all students. There are so many digital resources available today, it is only common sense to use what opportunities are out there for students. Students have the abilities to experience new technologies, we must encourage them to use the available resources to empower them to be creators of the future. When utilizing technology it is very important that teachers provide students with focused goals and a purpose for creating and maintaining an ePortfolio.
I feel that in time ePortfolios will prove to be a positive influence in students’ learning and will directly affect their love for learning. The end goal of the innovation plan is to provide all students at Monte Alto High School with the opportunity to use ePortfolios. This plan will allow them to become engaged, self-sufficient and independent learners.
Research has proven that ePortfolios are working, that students do become involved in their education, when tools are given to the student, they will become engaged.
While researching ePortfolios and what they are, I have come to realize they can become a very effective tool in students’ education. The ePortfolios that we will create will be effective in, displaying the students work, focus on working projects, show that each student has met specific goals unique to them, and that the student has met specific learning goals and requirements.
As a school counselor, I have chosen a technology movement that I believe will advance our students to the next level. I plan to have all students 9-12th grade create an e-Portfolio. This ePortfolio will consist of students’ classes they take each year, their work, their grades, accomplishments, basically the students’ educational story. Students will work on portfolios every school year, I believe this will engage them in their personal education plan. A digital portfolio will prove to be effective for all students’, because they will create their own story and have tangible artifacts to share with others.
Students’ will take responsibility and control of their personal education plan. The advantages of ePortfolios are endless, it will give students’ the opportunity to share their work with others, compile what they are learning and achieving, teachers can assess more effectively, and each students’ eportfolio is unique to them.
While working on my ACTION RESEARCH PLAN and researching to find out if personalized student eportfolios will provide significant improvement in their learning, and in their personal involvement, I have come to the conclusion that eportfolios’ in the classroom could prove to be effective. I believe that the integration of eportfolios’ can impact my students’ enthusiasm for learning. By using eportfolios and integrating new experiences into the classroom, students will advance in their knowledge and
understanding. Students will be actively involved in their education and learning by using eportfolios. When students are interested and enthusiastic about what they are doing they become more involved. Students are more willing to learn, and become more active in their own instruction. When they are actively involved in their learning, they understand the content and process better. Throughout the study I was able to observe students and take notes as to how the students were working and their reactions to using eportfolios. Students were really enjoying using computers and developing their eportfolios. Students were eager to get to class, and work on their eportfolios.

Action Research Outline
I. Topic
Eportfolios and the significance of them in learning environments. Eportfolios and improvement in student learning, instruction and involvement in their personal education. My plan is to increase student engagement through eportfolios and personalized learning experiences, hands on experiences, student responsibility for their own learning, goals and future goals.
II. Purpose
The purpose of my research is to analyze the difference in using eportfolios in the classroom and not using them. Are there differences between using eportfolios and creating electronic artifacts Vs. not using eportfolios. To create artifacts that will help students to refine their educational goals and learning. Students will take personal responsibility for their learning in high school by using eportfolios.
III. Research Questions
Will personalized student eportfolios provide significant improvement in their learning, instruction and involvement in their personal education? Will student engagement increase through eportfolios and personalized learning experiences, hands on experiences, responsibility for their own learning, goals and future? How can electronic portfolios be used to build and create future goals for students? What are some activities, procedures and practices we can use to ensure that eportfolios are effective? How can we get students to see the difference in using eportfolios and not using them?
IV. Research Design
I believe a mixed-method of data collection will be effective.
V. Data Collection
-
Student surveys
-
Testing/Assessment
-
Review of best practices
-
Teachers surveys
-
Observations
-
Eportfolio examples
VI. Measurement Instruments
1. .Eportfolios in the Classroom
VII. Literature Review
My literature review will focus on eportfolios in the classroom, are students learning, creating and experiencing positive learning experiences by using and creating eportfolios?
-
I will analyze current student-achievement while creating and using eportfolios.
-
I hope to be able to connect eportfolios with learning, planning and achievements.
-
I will document student performance while creating eportfolios.
-
I will provide intervention for students not connecting to the eportfolio process.
-
I will use research to improve instructional practices in using and creating eportfolios.
-
I hope to prove that by using digital applications, it is the key to success. By using eportfolios’ for students to create interest surveys, goals, what classes they would like to take, assignments, activities and personal attributes they are becoming more engaged in their personal learning and education.
-
I will prove that students are effectively learning when they have the opportunity to make choices, create ideas, improve their assignments and be positive about learning and eportfolios’.
-
I will prove that students are advancing and making connections, while experiencing hands on activites, specific creativity, specific work while working with counselors and teachers on their personal goals, individual studies and learning.
-
I believe that students will gain learning experiences that are essential in their education by attending eportfolio workshops and learning sessions’.
