Professional Learning

ePortfolio Professional Learning

In education we need to be on top of our game. We must be open minded to something new, and willing to improve our own teaching and learning. If we focus on doing this then in turn we can improve the quality of learning for our students. While working in the digital leading and learning program, we have come a long way. My plan has been focused on researching the use and implementation of learning ePortfolios in the High School.

I believe that professional learning can be a positive asset for the learning eportfolio program that that I am working on. We will take a look at practicing the “go and show” model. We will demonstrate, practice hands on and gain experience.  On Fridays’ we will be working as a team, collaborating, setting clear and achievable goals. Modeling and support will be provided during each session, where we will foster collaboration. The sessions’ will contain a task to practice and experience with. Administration, support teams and other peers will be reaching out to you to check in and see if you are in any need of assistance with goals.

We will focus on our goals and our long-term goals, which include school-wide implementation of ePortfolios. There is also an abundance of information and access to other ePortfolio related resources. I feel that this innovative alternative professional learning model will prove to be a positive asset for our school and students.

EPortfolio Desired Outcomes

High School students will create learning ePortfolios, have a blog and website where they gather their assignments, class schedules along with their personal degree plans. E-portfolios can prove to be used to demonstrate student progress toward standards, allow students to show who they are as individuals, while also providing a means for tracking a student’s growth. In order for this implementation to be effective, students need to understand what is being asked of them as they create and develop their ePortfolios over the four years they are in the high school. It is very important to teach students what it means to reflect and how to reflect on their learning and growth. This is where students reflect on their individual learning process, which helps them identify ownership of the ePortfolio. Students see their growth, and get a deep understanding of their goals. Students; will be directed on what should be included in their ePortfolios, and how to assess student learning through the ePortfolio.

Advances in technology have become an asset for educators, technology is a powerful tool that one can utilize to evaluate and assess the progress of students. Students are taking advantage of the technology circle, they are most savvy on the Internet, this is why I believe that a web-based digital portfolio represents the next generation of eportfolios.

Goal & 3 Column Table

Course Goal:

Teachers will effectively apply an innovative teaching practice by collaborating with colleagues to evaluate their impact on learners and design and model authentic professional learning (PL) activities that are active, have a significant duration, and are specific to their discipline.

Professional Learning Outline

In this outline, I will describe how I will use the PL principles to introduce and integrate our ePortfolio initiative.

I will use the BHAG and 3 column table for planning all sessions.

I will describe how I will move forward with implementing learning ePortfolios throughout the school.

1. The duration of professional learning must be significant and ongoing to allow time for teachers to learn a new strategy and work with the implementation problem.

2. There must be support for a teacher during the implementation stage that addresses the specific challenges of changing classroom practice.

3. Teachers’ initial exposure to a concept should not be passive, but rather should engage teachers through varied approaches so they can participate actively in making sense of a new practice.

4. Modelling has been found to be highly effective in helping teachers understand a new practice.

5. The content presented to teachers shouldn’t be generic, but instead specific to the discipline.

Learning ePortfolios PL Outline

Fall 2018

  1. Receive approval from administration for next year’s PL on ePortoflio

  • Approval to use next year’s allotted PD and “Friday Institutes” time to work with lead teachers.

  • Approval to begin the new PL model in Fall 2018

  1. We will achieve these approvals by:

Spring 2018-Fall 2019

  • Add two teachers from each department to our lead/expert team

  • During each allotted PL time, we work with the lead teachers on progressively implementing ePortfolios in their classrooms. We will use the UbD template to guide these meetings

  • By the end of the year, lead teachers will feel confident in Portfolio knowledge and use

Summer 2019

  • Request “Friday Institutes”   time for next year’s PL sessions to plan with lead teachers for full school integration

Fall 2019-Spring 2020

  • During PL sessions, expert teachers will work in individual departments to collaborate with them on ePortfolio implementation in the classroom. We will use the UbD template to guide these meetings

  • Administration, myself, and tech savvy teachers’ will visit each PL session as lead experts to answer questions and work with all departments

Fall 2020

  • Full implementation in all classrooms with continued PL sessions for support and collaboration for progressive growth in ePortoflio use
