Dear Early College High School,
I have observed in the current counseling department at High School, students are not aware of what is required for them to take throughout the school year, they are not aware of credit requirements, and they do not take ownership of their personal education.
I would like to introduce a plan that I believe will improve student engagement, student achievement, and district culture. The mission is to engage students in their personal education plan. By using technology, students will access personalized learning experiences. A plan will be guide students’, parents, counselors, teachers and administrators in a positive direction for each student.
The Vision is that each student will have an individual plan in place via an ePortfolio, beginning at the end of their 8th grade year, students will engage in an eportfolio by using WordPress. Which is a free program they can use to create their eportfolios. Students will be productive in their personal learning environment, engage in learning, students’ will challenge themselves in meeting their goals and be an advocate for their own learning experiences. Students will be expected to maintain portfolios that contain their education plan in ninth through twelfth grades. This could also be a credit class that is required of all students.
The goal is to create personalized learning experiences, encourage learner-centered growth, active learning, engage students in their own choices of classes, education and career choices. Students’ will explore career choices, goals, interests, which will all be put into a personal eportfolio. Students’ will create a plan for themselves, (required courses will still be in place). The plan will be concise, and flexible for those that change their education direction, there will be portability of information across, scheduling, planning, assessment, career plans, advising, curriculum, courses offered and college classes.
I believe that a program like this could enhance the students’ education. With this plan in place, we can meet the needs of our diverse population of students.
Sincerely,
Melissa M. Seitz
